When Candy Bars Are Not Enough
It is one thing to raise funds to send the school choir to Europe and yet quite another thing to raise funds to build buildings to house the choir! For the former you might sell candy. For the latter, you could not sell enough candy to pay for the cost of buildings in today’s economy. It is equally impractical to increase tuition fees in hopes of generating the needed revenue. That dictates the need for capital funds to be raised.
Historically, most if not all Christian Schools are unable to hire Development Directors. As a result, they have turned to professional organizations to help them with this crucial task. While the average industry rate of a fee of 10% of the amount committed might seem high, it has been proven that knowledgeable firms can help raise more than the board trying to go it alone.
The cost of not achieving the goal must be weighed against the cost of hiring the professional. Schools have basically one chance to get it right, and the cost of an experienced partner far outweighs the risk. Anyone can sell a candy bar.
